Default How To Write Compelling Ads in 95 Characters or Less? - 09-25-2003, 12:55 PM

Hi all,

My first post on this great forum...

I generate a lot of traffic to my sites through Google Adwords (and also Overture) & have had decent success using them.

So how to take it to the next level?

I figured my copy is lacking punch & that's where I could use some tips from the experts.

As most of you know, Google Adwords allows us to use only 95 characters spread over 3 lines.

What I'd really, really, really like to know is How to write compelling ads in a very limited amount of space that gets a high click through while still qualifying the clicks in some way.

Obviously there are many conflicting goals here...very limited space, qualifying the clicks & getting enough clicks while still passing the editorial reviews.

Any specific usable tips?

Any processes I can follow to ensure I do a better job writing PPC copy?

Thanks so much,

Bhavani Jampala

While not definitive, here's my experience (that's been successful for me), and taking into account that your keywords are targeted (not generic):
  • 1. Capitalize each word. Seems to pull more. Even capitalize words in the URL. (Use "SuccessDoctor.com" instead of "successdoctor.com.")

    2. Put [keywords] in brackets. Seems to work more.

    3. Use abbreviations when possible ONLY when those abbreviations are easily understandable by your target market. (For example, "Aff. Prog. Available.")

    4. Forget adjectives and superlatives. Use terse verbs. Verbs outpull adjectives. Use picture words and action verbs. ("Plow Cash Into Your Bank Account" versus "Add More Money Into Your Bank Account.")

    5. Think benefits. ("New Accounting Software Fattens Bottom Lines, Shoves Cash Into Your Pockets.")

    6. Use quantifiable, measurable or time-bound information. ("By $2,7685," "As Much As 367%," "Only 143 Packages Left," etc.)

    7. Pique curiosity. State a secret, an unknown fact, a question, a half-sentence (like "Shocking News About Banking Big Profits in Stocks Reveals That..." and that's it.)

    8. Use sex appeal. Not necessarily sex itself, but something that jolts their hormones, unleashes their emotions, pushes their hot buttons. (For a skincare cream, "Facelift in a Jar Reverses Aging Process, Zaps Wrinkles, Makes Him Want You More.")
Here are some examples. I recently wrote the copy for Stephen Pierce's Fibonacci Secrets (a CD Video tutorial for day traders). I also wrote his Google Ads (and he had some of his own).

Here's what they are...

Hi Michel,

WOW!

Thanks for an awesome reply that is extremely specific and immediately usable! The examples helped a lot. I printed out your post for filing.

I am definately NOT using #4, #7 & #8 from your post above. #4 is a totally new concept which I haven't heard of before so I'll be working on that soon as I refresh my memory about verbs & adjectives!

Thanks again Michel,
Bhavani
