From 2000 to 2004 I ran an article submission service. However as you know, it's hard to keep up with all of them unless you're automated either fully or somewhat or have an assistant!
Now I know that the rage is to submit articles, and I'm not telling you to not do it... however, before you do, consider some other things you can do first...
What I do before I even think of submitting my articles anywhere:
1) I post my articles to my own article bank. Why? My goal in writing articles is SIMPLE – to turn my knowledge into cash. I want to bring pre-qualified business owners to my site, connect with them and visa versa, develop relationships with them, help them grow their business while I increase my profits.
By posting articles to my site first, I bring in somewhat pre-qualified business owners. I say somewhat because most of them find me from a search engine and people don't always get what they want when they use the engines.
By posting the articles to my site first, I have a better chance that the search engines will pick up my articles using my website first.

Free Articles and Content For Your Ezine (Online Newsletter) Or Webste
For each link on the page, i have an article on its very own page with its own title, keywords, etc. etc. Then you can see the format of the text on the page - title, my picture, summary, article, bio, and call to action (which I have found to be of utmost importance and something most folks leave out)
That call to action has been the best thing I created. It's professional yet friendly. My articles have been in newspapers, magazines, etc. all over the world.... because I directly, while I have their attention give people/editors/radio and TV personalities permission to use them. I think you get the message
2) I submit my article to my ezine, with my bio box (author’s box) and my ezine mentions that if someone wants to use any part of my article, they only need contact me.
3) I post to the article submission program I have chosen to work with* - Article Marketer (AM)
Article Distribution. Complete. Extensive. Quick. Article Marketer BUT I use their scheduler which allows my article to be sent out sometime in the future (I use 2 months) I like to wait and allow my articles to be picked up by the search engines on my site first.
NOTE: * To be up front - After deciding to move away from the article submission business, I reviewed all the article submission services and choose to collaborate with AM. My position with them is the founding member of Article Marketer University and affiliate.
4) I have a list in MS Excel of article banks that article marketer doesn't post to... like many of the yahoo groups. Below are what I consider the best of the best, they've been around the longest (since 2000) and I get requests from their members to use my articles:
AA Business
aabusiness : Article Announce Business - Writer and Publisher Exchange - Free articles for publication
AA General
aageneral : Article Announce General Interest Writer & Publisher Exchange. Free articles for publication
AA Health
aahealth : Article Announce Health and Fitness Writer & Publisher Exchange. Free articles for publication
AA Home

You can find a few more to subscribe to an article called Article Banks are Internet Gold
Article Banks - Article Directories Free Content and Articles for ezines, Blogs, Newsletters, Magazine or web sites
NOTE: Only subscribe to these yahoogroups lists in digest mode or your articles won't be posted. Create a special email address just for article banks. This way confirms, articles from others, etc. can be filtered to one folder in Outlook for you to review, do something with or delete. If you do it any other way, you'll get bombarded with articles from the lists

And of course where there are email addresses, there are a few bad eggs - those spammers.
5. Because I ran a submission service I’m always sent links to article banks or directories. I check to see if my articles are already on it on it; if not, I tell AM about them. In those few situations where they are unable to add the bank to their automated list I manually submit articles to. Yes, sometimes the article bank owner doesn't want automated articles submitted to their site or the way the web site is set up isn’t easy to automate.
