Default Adverbs - how to use them? - 07-03-2006, 09:20 AM

Hi,

I am not an English native speaker and I have following copywriting question regarding adverbs:

How does the meaning change if I use adverb in front or after the substantive?

Example 1:
... directly into the website.

Example 2:
... into the website directly.

Thanx you for help!

Happy cwriting!

I'm no English professor, but I'll try to answer.

In the examples you gave, there is no real difference in the meaning, although one sounds more correct to me.

In many cases the first example would just sound better. Like, "This page will not lead you to an optin page. It will take you directly into the website."

But there are also ways in which the second example you gave, sounds better.

All in all, I think the first one is the more correct way to use that adverb.

Just my opinion.

It's called a dangling modifier, for the grammar cops. (I teach grammar, but intentionally break the rules when I write sales copy. Shhh... my students don't know I break the rules I teach them. But they for darn sure are shocked that I generate hundreds of thousands of dollars for my clients with words. The question, "Why do I need to learn this anyways, I'll never use this in the real world" never comes up anymore.)

A big no no, when writing a term paper.

But, people speak "broken english" like this all the time. So the question becomes, "Will it effect sales?"

I'd say the answer is in the market you're trying to sell to. And the image you're trying to pass off in your sales copy.

But don't forget you've got to know the rules before breaking them. Thanks Zachary for the insightful answer.
