Default eBay advice? - 06-28-2006, 04:23 AM

Hi,

I was thinking of selling on ebay to get some practise writing copy for a variety of different products, and making some money while I'm at it.

But I don't have any idea about where to start... Can anyone recommend a great guide to selling on ebay (there seem to be so many, it's hard to choose)? Does anyone know of a drop shipping company I could use...so I could focus on the writing and marketing aspect, and let someone else handle fulfillment?

Thanks,

Ryan

I considered selling on ebay, but I feel like the learning curve is so steep that I'd be doing a lot more than writing copy - and that would take away from the time you spend learning about writing copy.

I'd like to try writing a sales page for a really good affiliate product, then using Adwords to promote it. I believe this allows a person to spend more time finding a good product, learning about it (part of the copywriter's job), and writing the letter and the adwords ad, and less time learning other stuff.

Now I don't have experience with either of these things - they're just both things I've considered. Others here have far more experience.

I will say this: if you do sell on ebay, consider finding a dropshipper. You don't have to carry inventory - the dropshipper does that and ships the product direct.

Here's a resource I liked when I was considering learning to sell on ebay:

http://worldwidebrands.com/

Hope this is helpful.

Peace,

Janet

No intended bragging here, but I have had very good results selling personal items on eBay using my adcopy, in fact most of my stuff sells within a couple of hours of submittal, so I know how to create a good ad.

In fact, I'm gearing up to sell some old fire alarm equipment for a friend of mine who's going out of business.

If I remember, I'll come back here and post a link to it and also show you how quickly items can sell using copywriting techniques on eBay.

I can't help you much in way of fullfillment as I buy and sell my own stuff, but then again, I don't do this as a full time business either.

What you can do to get this information is search eBay and buy a few "how to sell on eBay" courses or simply ask a few other sellers how they are doing it. Some of these folks won't mind sharing this information with you if you ask them nicely.

Hope this helps.

I'd do what Janet suggested.

Just go http://www.clickbank.com

and find a product that you think you could write
a better sales letter for.

Run half of your traffic to the original page, and run
half of the traffic to the salesletter you write and see
if you can beat what is there currently.

Ideally you write a letter that beats the existing one, and
get paid to do it.

Good luck.

Hmmm, while I've taken that approach (of writing a better sales letter for a clickbank product) before, I've never tried split testing against the product creator's letter. How do you do that? Last I checked, clickbank doesn't show you which sales page the order originated from. (unless I'm overlooking something or mising out on a new feature).

The only thing I could come up with is to track how many click over to your order page before being sent to clickbank, and tracking those as sales, but it doesn't take into account "shopping cart abandonment."

Just to be more specific...

Create two affiliate accounts with Clickbank.

Use AffiliateCloner to write your own salesletter, and drive traffic to the order page (bypassing their salesletter).

Use the 2nd affiliate account to promote the product as-is -- using their salesletter.

And compare sales from both accounts.

This is great if your doing two separate promotions. For example, do a mailing to one list with one link (or a segment of your list), and then link #2 to the other. And then compare.

But what if it's a unified link split-test (meaning, one link will randomly send traffic to one or the other)? You can use affiliate cloner to create your links (affiliate link cloaking) for #2 as well, and then use split-test software to divert traffic randomly -- or even just simple scripts to serve pages or links randomly.

That's too cool. I'll have to check that out.

Thanks for posting it!

Can't this be done without Affiliate Cloner?

... simply go to the sales page using your affiliate link?

Michel, I've heard you talk of this before, but what does AC do that I can't do for myself with an affiliate link coupled with a split testing script?

... maybe I'm missing something
