Default Halbert, Carlton and Fortin on WordPress - 05-02-2006, 12:27 PM

I've just recently redesigned the Gary Halbert and John Carlton recordings website using WordPress, with new features, RSS feeds and more.

I had to designthe templates personally. It's plain (not colorful or fancy), but focused primarily on content. I'm just looking for feedback on navigation, usability, etc.

Take a look and tell me what you think:

Looks real good. In fact, I just added an autoresponder sequence to point to it. A great resource!

There's rather a lot competing for attention - my eyes weren't sure where to look first, and as I was reading I was distracted by all the other stuff going on on the page.

HTH,

Jane

It does seem a bit cluttered -- maybe the background for the main text could be a slightly different shade than the sidebars?

How did you get so many AdWords ads in there? I thought there was a limit...

Nicely done, Michel... but then I love Wordpress. I'm a huge fan of WP.

I really like how you organized the categories, as well as offer archives. It is nice to see a WP installation so well organized.

My only concern echoes those above -- it is very cluttered, and I don't know where to start. It feels overwhelming. Since the Google Ads look just as important as the menu and the text, I don't know what is really important. It takes some work on my part to find the "real" content, figure out where I should click to see the meat & potatoes.

Honestly, unless the primary goal of this site is to sell ad-clicks, I would drop the AdWords on the right, and stick with horizontal AdWords "bars" at the top/bottom. Yes, I realize that the Adwords column on the right is some seriously prime real estate but if your site exists to sell something other than AdWords, then the AdWords are seriously detracting from the main product.

I think adjusting where your AdWords are shown, and how they are displayed, will go a long way to create more white-space and let the viewer's eye "rest" -- we won't have to work so hard at reading it, which will make it more of a pleasure to spend time at.

Just my thoughts, hope it helps somehow.

Bailey

I was going to respond, but you keep on changing the damn site!

Guess I'll wait a bit until you're done playing around.

HTH,

Jane
I agree with Jane on this one. Although I've "trained" myself to "disregard"
the adsense ads, I'd imagine other users might get bugged with one detail
too many on the site.

I'm probably used to WP sites having the sidebar links preferably on the
right since I want to read the content left to right. So content first, then the
other links later.

OTOH I understand the "subliminal desire" to get people to sign-up via the
optin form at the upper right. But for me, knowing I'm learning from the
site is enough reason for me to opt-in to your mailing list.

Don't you just love WP?

My 2 cents:

The downloads are accessible and the Adsense links are very attractive to click. That's all that matters. You're giving away something extremely valuable for free, so if I were you Michel, I'd use whatever maximizes Adsense revenue.

Three sections are allowed -- I believe I saw two.

OK - Michel, I won't pull any punches here...

You're kidding right?

As far as you're "etc" portion of the critique goes -- I think it stinks.

You wanted an "honest" opinion -- you got it.

I also think it is too cluttered.

Please don't be offended by my comments Michel -- I still love ya!

UPDATE:
I've visited it three times and was bored each time.

Sorry for not kissin' *ss on this one Michel, but I'm not going to lie.

For some reason, I keep having thoughts that you're just seeing who the "bullsh*tters" are here.

Stephen, you've got to stop beating around the bush! Tell us what you really think!

In all seriousness, in retrospect is IS a little busy. But I had no trouble finding everything. Michel, I thought you was looking for feedback on navability and such. And I guess you've been tinkering with the layout and such, but I still have no problem getting to the info I want.

In fact, I just reread the Calton interview transcript earlier today. And then on our call tonight Michel starting talking about some stuff John said, and it all leaped into my mind, because it was fresh again.

So no arse kissing here...just my honest feedback.

John
