That might depend on who you are (what you look like).

You won't see my mug shot on my website.

I've got it, You need it, I'm selling it at:

Have no fear Eric, I can't PhotoChop you so that you'd look almost as good as Brad Pitt or George Clooney.

I think it all depends on what you are selling or who your market is.

If selling a service, I would say that having a picture helps build trust and also creates instant rapoort with your audience.

I don't think it truly matters whether the picture is in the header or just in the sales page itself, just that it's there "somewhere".

I created a blog for a friend of mine and even though he's no "Brad Pitt", the guys got a HUGE fanfare of over 500-600 subscribers to his newsletter.

Here's the link:
http://heartsandhumor.com

As you can see he's no Heartbreaker -- (just a regular guy) and he gets traffic like CRAZY! (in fact so much that I've had to extend his bandwidth on my hosting service five times).

I will also say here that I once owned a traffic website that was just puttering along until I added my picture to it. Once added, the website took off like a rocket.

I guess this would be a great thing to test, but I can tell you that when visiting a strange site, I like to know who I'm dealing with.

Well...... *cough* *sputter* I'm not really sure how to say this politely. And God knows I'm no looker myself! But that's why I don't put my picture on my own sites.

But, take for instance, Dan Kennedy. The guy looks like a used car salesman. His picture has kept me from spending my money on any of his products, to this day. I just cannot grapple with trusting a guy that looks the way he does. I think it's the mustache.

I've been about to make other purchases as well, only to discover that the doggone site is being run by some high school kid. That's a dead give-away that he's reselling somebody else's work, and it can be had (a) by someone older and more established; and (b) likely cheaper.

So in those cases, the picture has cost them sales, too.

I'd exercise some serious caution on this front.

Bailey

Good topic.

I've been considering having some professional pics done for all-purpose uses in the future. Does anyone have experience with this?

We have our picture on one of our sites, but to me it looks a bit amateurish.

But I think a good portfolio of pics that don't look too posed are probably something we'll do. Just to have some things to throw up when we need 'em. (please, no "throw up" puns")

I really like Peter Stone's pic on his blog. It just oozes character.

I just finished a project where I couldn't use the persons identity or picture. So establishing credibility was tough. I'll let you know how it did when I get some results.

Can't you just use a picture of anyone who looks the part? If you can author the letters under a nom d' plume, why not a photo d' plume?

Bailey,
As far as hosting goes, It probably wouldn't be affective, unless you made it more personal, like http://www.wwkiosk.com

-- not trying to push your competition here, just using them as an example.

BTW-- You're purtier than a glob of butter meltin' on a stack of wheat cakes
