Default Headline Images - max size? - 03-29-2006, 09:53 PM

Hey Guys,

I noticed a lot of guys, like Michel and Ken and are using images for their headlines, I want to try it with my next sales letter online. Couple quick questions:

1. What is the max size to make a headline image, since it's supposed to catch their attention first--it can't load slow...

2. Is there a specific font you've found works well? I always liked Impact for ... well...the impact

3. Do you ever worry about people that have their images turned off while surfing? Or the image not loading?

Thanks!
Caleb

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe "impact" is an "all caps" font.

Although I do think it's a classy-looking font--

I WOULDN'T USE IMPACT FOR A HEADLINE FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT ALL CAPS=SCREAMING!

As far as size goes...

I personally choose a size that fits well with the page width.

If it's a narrow page, I would go smaller.

If it's wide, I prefer a larger font size.

I've never given much thought about folks who have their images turned off.

Very good question!

If you have ImageReady (part of PhotoShop) then you need not be too concerned on size because of the wonderful "slice" feature it has.

The pic below shows Michel's header which is currently all one piece and 53kb in size. I brought the header into ImageReady...inserted some guide lines where I wanted the cuts and told it so slice and dice. The program cut up the image into 14 tiny pieces (from 1.5kb to 4.8kb in size) which are supposed to load much faster than one "big" 53kb image. I don't think anyone on broadband can see the difference, but it does make a difference to those on dialup connections. ImageReady also gives you the html code which you just drop into Dreamweaver and it assembles all the pieces correctly for you.

Impact is upper and lower case. But, for the font to have "impact" it needs to be set large. So, if you have a MEGA-headline it won't work well. If your headline is under 10 words then it might work just fine.

Thanks once again JayKay for your input!

I've got all of the software you've listed, but haven't even touched on most of the features they offer (especially Photoshop and ImageReady).

I've got ImageReady, but haven't a clue what the difference is between it and Photoshop...

Maybe I should be visiting more forums on how to create graphics for Photoshop, ImageReady, Fireworks, and Dreamweaver.

... know of any good ones?

I use PhotoShop and ImageReady, as JayKay said. For smaller projects, I tend to use PaintShop Pro, now owned by Ottawa's own Corel Corp.

I've been using it since version 4 (now version 10).

I'm self-taught when it comes to PhotoShop/ImageReady. It's a love/hate relationship with the program. I love it when I have an "ah haa" moment, but I hate it when it takes forever to get there. I play with PhotoShop like I used to play online Quake3. The older you are. . .the longer it takes, but as an old phart I can still frag a lot of young punks.

(and yes, I could have kept on superimposing the book inside the book for another 2 or 3 levels, but I gotz bored.)

Jaykay,

Thanks a lot for the advice on the images! And the program to use.

That helps a lot!

Guess we don't worry about the people with images turned off anymore huh? Prolly not too many of those people around anyways...like dialup users

Great answers, thanks a lot!
