Default Hello, My name is KC and I have a question - 04-01-2004, 03:49 PM

Hello there,
I am new here and just wondered if anyone has heard anything on the Michael Masterson's 6 figure copywriting course? I believe it's offered through AWAI....
I am determined to learn copywriting, and have been reading anything I can get my hands on! I have been thinking of getting this course as soon as money permits. As it stands right now, I'm trying to learn what I can on a $0 budget. My husband and kids laugh as I disect every piece of mail that comes to our mailbox, and every website they visit. They believe I have lost my mind, and at times I wonder also. Somedays I feel like I'm going in circles, and not learning anything. So I thought maybe a more organized, step by step approach would be better. If you have any advice I would appreciate it. Thanks!
Sincerely, KC

I think what you're doing is just great. Yes, you will learn loads from studying web sites and mail. I do the same each and every day.

The course is excellent for learning how to write one style of salescopy.

What you may find after the course, is that your eyes glaze over as you ask yourself: "What now?" "How do I market myself?"

My response is that the business world is so in need of writers that I believe you could print up fliers, start at the top floor of an office building, hand them out and by the time you get to the bottom have a client or two. I haven't tried that, but take it for whatever it's worth. And don't take my word for it -- try it for yourself.

Many people won't take that first step to market themselves for whatever reason.

Regardless, it's a very enjoyable course with many quick rewards along the way.

While you're waiting for the dough to pay for it, why not rewrite some of the ads you see coming in the mail or some of the Web located sales letters. That will accelerate your learning and give you some portfolio material for when you finish the course, so you'll be able to run right out and start selling your new found expertise.

Please do yourself a favor and think about the marketing end of the deal prior to starting. I've seen it take the wind out of sails, quickly. You'll need to generate high enough paying jobs in sufficient quantity to justify your time. How are you going to do that? You can start by clicking here.

Now, if you're really PO'd at the gang that are laughing, buy the book at the link above and jump in. Show 'em.

KC:

As a fellow copywriter I can confirm a few things.

Yes, you are probably going nuts. Yes most copywriters are nuts. Yes Pete stone is nuts. Sure Mike Fortin is probably going nuts and if you havent come across Jane here yet ... shes nearly nuts .

I'm just Alan and the only sane one in this place, so welcome, welcome, welcome to the crazy world of copywriters.

Keep going sounds as though you are on the right path, well done.

KC, I took that course 2 years ago (the first half, all I could afford). It was one of the better ones, although the first few lessons were pretty obvious "sells" for the rest of the course. I.E. "in just a few weeks, we'll share..." and in a few weeks, I was told what exciting things I would be learning soon, in just a few more weeks. I think I learned as much from their techniques, trying to use them on me, than from the planned lessons, LOL. But the best bit of advice that they do give is to go to the direct marketing masterpieces, and copy them. Ingrain them. Let them sink in. They also teach how to do the necessary background research to create a decent D.M. piece, something that most people don't know, but the best writers rely upon. The course didn't "make me a good writer" but the feedback built my confidence level, and I started what I was applying right away when writing for clients. I do think it's well worth the money, along with some other courses out there (including Michel's, which I recently purchased). 'Nuff said, and I wish you the very best.

Thank you all for the advice, and for the great welcome. I appreciate every bit of it! I look forward to learning anything, and everything I can. I wish I felt this way when I was in school. And of course, if I could harness the same passion I have for learning copywriting into my house-cleaning, I wouldn't have to bring in search parties to find my children, who have managed to get lost in the growing piles of laundry. LOL No I'm not really that bad, just teasing a little, although I do tend to get very sidetracked and ingrossed in trying to find out as much information as I can find.
Again thanks for all your comments!
Sincerely, KC

Hi KC, I'm also learning copywriting, I can't call myself a good one, but at least, I can write some decent copy

I've just purchased one e-book to learn online/offine copywriting, and for the price it was exeedingly excellent. It's name is "Make Your Words Sell!" and it's written by Joe Robson. I buy that for around $27 bucks, and is really big, and not just big it's very good indeed. Includes some good advanced things like mindsets, headlines, response-words, etc.

You may want to take a look at the website: http://myws.sitesell.com

Also, a good place to get some starter articles is http://www.adcopywriting.com, I started there my learning on copywriting on a $0 budget just like you.

Greetings,
Abraham

The best copywriting courses are:

a) study all of Michel's portfolio, plus his copyonfire.com dvd course
b) get John Carlton's course, starting with the cheap date at marketingrebel.com (as someone noted, the swipe files in the insiders' club, plus Carlton's answers to emails etc, is very valuable, I'm an insider)
c) Dan Kennedy's advanced copywriting in a box (get from 'successjunkie' licensed seller on ebay.com)

Other excellent courses include: Brian Keith Voiles' Admagic, Robson's "Make your Words Sell" ebook (nice job on that, it's what I first read about online copy), Bob Serlings' Power Copywriting for the Internet course.

The video critiques at Michel's www.thecopydoctor.com and Brian's briankeithkillercopyclinic.com are exceptionally important to get.

other free resources, hardtofindads.com, all of Michel's articles on his site here, thegaryhalbertletter.com .. study of of Corey's ads at www.marketingtips.com ...

I haven't tried the Masterson course, you can read feedback on it at AWAI's forum.

The best use of copy dollars is, imho, first access the video critique sites - that's immediate and useful... then get all the books (ogilvy/caples/collier/etc) and ebooks (MYWS), then get the longer courses, then when you're ready, hire Michel and Carlton for copywriting coaching support. I would do that sequence, for the same $ as attending a seminar type event.

It's been the wisest dollar use for me of any of my business expenses by a large margin. And, you have to be prepared to act, and use the valuable tips, apply them, that these gifted professionals share with you.

I always test everything out, so far it's all been on the money, and made me money, all the tips I've gotten especially from Fortin & Carlton.

Ken
