Default What kind of contracts and pay structure do you use? - 02-04-2006, 04:06 PM

Hi Everyone,

I am just wondering what kind of contracts that you established free lance copywriters are using with your clients.

Do you write them up yourselves? Do you have a template from a source I could look at? Do you ask for half up front, then half at time of delivery?

What do you usually charge for a letter campaign versus a space ad?

I am a novice copywriter but have a couple of potential clients who may be interested. Just wanted to get an idea of how to structure payment and such.

Thanks so much for your help and this forum is absolutely AWESOME in terms of insight and practical knowledge from "in the trenches" copywriters

99% of the time I'm getting a FEE... plus a cut of what I make happen.

(let me qualify this... I'm not strickly a copywriter. I'm a business growth strategist and copy is sometimes part of what I do for a client)

Example: I have one client that this year will pay me around $75,000.00 -- just on the percentage side of our arrangement.

I also have deals where I get equity in companies for the work I do... in addition to fees and percentages.

You just have to recognize what kind of value you bring to the table -- and be willing to ask for the money (or whatever other arrangement you make). Now, that means you should be bringing tremendous amounts of value to the deal. Just don't be afraid to ask for the money.

Important...

If you want to know more about this -- I'll be talking more about how I put these types of deals together on John Ritskowitz's "Million Dollar Marketing Roundtable" conference call with Yanik Silver, Michel Fortin,
David Garfinkel and Me (On Feb 7th).

Dear JP:

Thanks for pointing us to the Million Dollar Roundtable page.

Great sales letter there.

"The Only Way To Make More Money Is To Enter A Bank
With A Loaded Revolver..."

What a great line.

What a great line.
I stole a variation of that from Clayton Makepeace. I think he said he used that headline when he launched his own copywriting career.
