Default 2 Kinds of Copywriters - 09-01-2005, 08:24 AM

I notice that there are two kinds of copywriters out there. Just reading through the threads on this site, you can easily see who fits where. But what do you think about yourself?

Are you a writer who had to learn to market?

Or are you a marketer who had to learn to write?

I'm definitely a long-time writer who has been learning about marketing and writing persuasively. I'm interested in hearing from others.

I'm a marketer who had to learn to write copy in order to have the full toolkit.

My business writing has always been pretty decent - I've written business cases, strategy documents and other reports to persuade people of certain points of view - most of which found their way to the MD/CEO eventually. Persuading with logic is not a problem! Illogical persuasion is another thing altogether - something I haven't entirely mastered yet!

I'm definitely a writer who is learning to market himself. Writing copy specifically is pretty new, but I'm feeling better and better about it the more I read and practice. What is a totally new world is cold-calling (I can't wait until I get some $ for a big ole DM campaign!), designing a great business card, the envelope design, the order of materials in the envelope, etc. Never had to think about that smaller stuff before, nor did I realize how absolutely crucial it is to the process.

Of course, I'm making mistakes, but the marketing and the writing are getting easier, thanks to the reading I'm doing and the advice on this board.

Great post!
